Chairman’s Message

Welcome! I am pleased to introduce you to the Department of Biotechnology that was established in 2014.
The Department offers a rigorous undergraduate experience in Biotechnology. Our 21st century curriculum is spread over eight 18-week semesters and comprised of foundational courses in mathematics, chemistry and computer science during the first academic year, and others in biology that gradually increases in depth over the subsequent six semesters. Several social science courses are included in our curriculum and ample emphasis is placed on strengthening the oral and written communication skills of students.
The field of Biotechnology employs cellular and molecular processes to develop products and technologies that enhance the quality of human and animal life as well as to improve our environmental conditions. The overarching goals of biotechnology are: 1. Diagnose and eradicate debilitating and rare disease; 2. Produce affordable nutrition for the 7.5 billion people and particularly those living below the poverty line; 3. Produce clean energy; and 4. Clean up our polluted environment. Although much progress has been made in life sciences during the past three decades, the best is yet to come.

Department also offers an MS program in Biotechnology and intends to launch a PhD programme in Biotechnology within the next 6 months.
At IIB, we believe in imparting theoretical and practical knowledge that promotes a clear understanding of how science is conducted, how experiments are designed and how data is analyzed and communicated. Towards that end, we offer a number of laboratory courses to our students throughout their 4 years. Moreover, our undergraduate students are expected to conduct research in their final year under the supervision of experienced researchers.
